90 Years of cultural connection and educational excellence
In the 1930s, during one of the most challenging periods in modern history, the British Council was born. Founded amidst the uncertainty of the Great Depression, the organisation embraced a bold mission: to build cultural bridges and promote mutual understanding between the UK and the world.
Fast forward 90 years, and this vision continues to inspire, with the British Council now a global leader in cultural relations and education. One of its most enduring legacies is its co-creation of IELTS—the world’s leading English language qualification.
IELTS: A global standard in English testing
Originally launched as ELTS in 1980, the exam evolved into IELTS in 1989 and has since become a gold standard for English proficiency. In 2023 alone, over 4 million tests were taken worldwide, with 12,500 organisations recognising IELTS as the preferred measure of English language skills.
