Cambridge English Skills Assessment for Every Student, Not Just the Diploma Track

Cambridge English Skills Assessment for Every Student, Not Just the Diploma Track

Most English assessments in schools are designed to answer one question: Is this student ready for a certification exam? CEST for Schools asks something more immediately useful -- how strong is every student's English, regardless of where they are headed after school? Developed by Cambridge English, this adaptive digital tool assesses all four language skills across CEFR levels A1 to C1, can be administered within the school itself, and delivers results within 48 hours. Swiss Exams will be offering CEST for Schools from Q4.

Cambridge English Skills Assessment for Every Student, Not Just the Diploma Track

Coming Soon in Q4: CEST for Schools

Most English assessments in schools are built around one question: is this student ready for a certification exam? CEST for Schools asks a different one, and for many teachers and school leaders, a more immediately useful one: how strong is every student's English, regardless of whether they are heading toward a diploma?

That distinction matters. Certification exams serve students on an academic or formal qualification track. But most secondary school cohorts contain a much wider range of learners, students heading into apprenticeships, students in Brückenangebote programmes, students preparing to enter the workforce, or transition to the next stage of their education. These students deserve a reliable picture of their English competence, too. Until now, there has been no affordable, practical, Cambridge-quality skills assessment tool designed specifically to give it to them.

CEST for Schools is that tool, and it is coming to Swiss Exams in Q4.

What is CEST for Schools?

The Cambridge English Skills Test for Schools is a state-of-the-art digital skills assessment tool developed by Cambridge English. It is modular and adaptive — assessing all four language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) across CEFR levels A1 to C1 — and it can be administered within the school itself, on demand, without the logistics of a formal exam session. Results are available within 48 hours, giving teachers and school leaders actionable insight when they need it.

It is designed for all students, not only those pursuing a diploma. A school can use it to assess an entire cohort and receive a precise, CEFR-referenced picture of where each student stands in real-world English competence. Schools use it for end-of-year competency assessment, progress tracking across classes and groups, skills gap analysis to identify where individual students need support, and checking readiness for higher Cambridge English qualifications.

Who it is for

CEST for Schools is built for secondary schools and Brückenangebote programmes that want to understand the English competency of their full student body — not just the subset preparing for a Cambridge qualification. That means students heading into commercial apprenticeships, technical training, or any vocational pathway where English will matter in the workplace. It means students completing a Brückenangebot who need to understand where they stand before making their next transition. And it means school leaders and language coordinators who want a whole-cohort view of English competence that no certification exam has ever been able to provide.

CEST is a skills assessment tool, not a certification exam.

This point is worth stating directly. CEST for Schools does not produce a diploma or a certificate. It is a skills assessment tool, it tells you in a report, precisely and quickly, where a student is across all four language skills. For students who are clearly ready for a Cambridge qualification, it naturally informs the next step toward certification. For students who are not on that track, it provides something equally valuable: a credible, Cambridge-quality competency result that students and schools can understand and act on. Both outcomes are served by the same sitting.

For schools that already work with Swiss Exams on Cambridge English qualifications, CEST for Schools extends the value of that partnership to the whole cohort, the diploma track, and the broader skills assessment track, alongside each other, backed by the same Cambridge standard.

CEST also comes in two further versions.

Alongside CEST for Schools, the Cambridge English Skills Test is available as CEST General, for institutions and organisations assessing general English competence in adult learners aged 16 and above, and CEST Business, designed for HR departments and training managers who need to assess and track English proficiency in a professional workplace context. Both are AI-proctored, deliver results within 48 hours, and are fully online. Swiss Exams offers all three versions.

A note on proctoring.

CEST General and CEST Business are AI-proctored; the test monitors candidates remotely using artificial intelligence, allowing fully flexible, unsupervised administration anywhere with an internet connection. CEST for Schools does not use AI proctoring. Because the test is designed for school-aged learners who are minors, it is administered under school supervision rather than remote AI monitoring, a deliberate decision that protects students and gives schools full oversight of the assessment environment.
