Why Cambridge is updating the Writing module
- More fairness and accuracy: Looking at both reports and emails gives a clearer view of a candidate’s writing skills.
- Everyday relevance: Email is a keyway people communicate in workplaces. This new task format shows that common use.
- More opportunities to show your skills: Having different writing styles gives candidates more ways to demonstrate their strengths.
What is the difference?
- Previously: Candidates had 45 minutes to write just one essay or report.
- Now: They have 55 minutes to complete two tasks, providing a broader assessment of writing ability.
What the Linguaskill Writing module now involves
The Cambridge Linguaskill Writing module takes a total of 55 minutes and results are available within 3–5 working days.
It is divided into two parts: Part 1 (25%) requires writing an email of at least 50 words, while Part 2 (75%) involves either an essay for Linguaskill General or a report for Linguaskill Business, with a recommended minimum of 250 words.
Note: Earlier guidance mentioned around 180 words for the longer task, but Cambridge now recommends at least 250 words to reflect higher expectations at each CEFR level.
