Challenge N°1: Addressing slow connections
ICB, the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers is one of the largest assessment bodies in the world, for Accounting, Management and Office Administration programmes.
During their proctored exam, ICB encountered an initial challenge where test-takers struggled to pass system checks due to their low bandwidth.
What do system checks and low bandwidth mean in online proctoring?
Systems checks begin with evaluating the internet connection, webcam, and microphone. Based on this, the identity of the candidate and the exam environment can be verifiedto ensure everything runs smoothly.
Low bandwidth essentially means slow internet transmission, which can occur for example due to too many devices on the network or slower internet speeds.
This issue significantly impacted candidates' ability to proceed with the exams.
Cracking the code makes the remote proctoring smoother
A tailored assessment solution was implemented by simplifying the system check requirements and reducing the internet load. These adjustments enabled test-takers with low bandwidth to pass the checks successfully, ensuring their participation in the exams.
The dedicated efforts of developers, who meticulously adjusted the source code, were crucial in overcoming this challenge.
Challenge N°2: Ensuring connectivity stability
Internet connection issues didn't stop there. Another obstacle ICB faced was unstable connectivity and high ping rates. This means it took longer for the system to respond to an action, which test-takers experienced due to poor internet infrastructure in the region.
This instability made it hard for the system to detect active connections, causing test-takers' sessions to freeze or be mistakenly terminated during their remote exams.
Let´s enhance the flexibility of ICB's remote proctored exams
To address this, the validation of test-taker connectivity during remote exam sessions was customised. The development team reprogrammed the validation system, allowing for more flexibility and accounting for the unique connectivity challenges faced by ICB's test-takers.
Tailored solutions make the difference
With a proactive approach and customised solutions, even slow internet is not an issue.
Through Certify’s tailored solutions, ICB successfully overcame the challenges in their online proctored exam process. The adjustments made to system checks enabled test-takers with low bandwidth to proceed with their exams, eliminating unnecessary barriers. Furthermore, the reprogrammed validation system ensured that connectivity instability did not negatively impact test-takers' participation, creating a more reliable exam experience.
* What is remote proctoring?
Thanks to AI-based remote proctoring solutions, students can take online tests anywhere they have access to a computer and a quiet room. This approach frees the schools or other institutions from the practical chores of arranging and delivering onsite proctored exams.
Also, this eliminates the need for candidates to travel to a specific venue at a set time, enabling assessments from any suitable location and at any time. Read more about the new normal – remote proctoring in online education.
